So I just got off our monthly conference call with our adoption agency. I won't bog all of you down with details, but I will tell you that things are looking up! It seems the new changes at MOWCYA are creating a more streamlined process with more room for ethical oversight. The folks there seem to be very proactive about dealing with the backlog created by The Big Slowdown, and also very determined to be fair and consistent with all the agencies currently operating in Ethiopia. Our agency basically stated that their ET program would be smaller than it has been in the past, but that it would certainly continue. My hope (and I have a sneaky suspicion that this might be one of MOWCYA's reasons for slowing things down) is that the increase in oversight and wait times will drive out agencies who have in the past made money off of quick, and unethical, adoptions. Way to go MOWCYA! Hit 'em where it hurts--right in the wallet.
